Frequently Asked Questions
CAN I REMAIN ANONYMOUS?
You can relax when you visit Valley Brook knowing that no one is going to single you out, put a visitor sticker on you, or otherwise embarrass you. While people are given the opportunity to wear a nametag, it is not mandated. After the service, you can grab some coffee and hang out as long as you like. This is truly a safe place to find answers at your own pace.
WHAT IS YOUR ATMOSPHERE LIKE?
The atmosphere is casual and the dress is generally casual. While most people dress casual, you will see everything from a suit and tie to jeans and shorts. We have created an environment where you can relax, enjoy the service, and be yourself.
WHAT IS YOUR MUSIC LIKE?
Almost all of our music is contemporary. We don’t have hymnals or an organ. Instead we have a band with upbeat contemporary music. You'll hear songs you can relate to; contemporary and some traditional ones.
WHAT ARE YOUR MESSAGES LIKE?
Our pastor teaches practical, relevant messages. Every message is designed to address real everyday issues we all face. Things like parenting, family issues, addictions, or financial tensions. You'll find that the use of drama and video help the experience come alive.
HOW LONG ARE YOUR SERVICES?
When we gather, we want to help people engage God. Our services generally last no longer than 75 minutes.
WILL YOU ASK ME FOR MONEY?
You won't be asked for money - we're more interested in genuinely helping you in your spiritual journey than in your money. While we do take an offering, we routinely ask guests to keep their wallets in their pockets. People who call this their church home fund Valley Brook through their giving.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU CELEBRATE COMMUNION?
We celebrate Communion the first Sunday of every month. You may call it by another name: "The Lord's Supper," "Holy Communion," or "The Eucharist," but it was commanded of Christ-followers by Jesus himself. He said do this in His memory. Communion means nothing if you are not a follower of Jesus, so we encourage everyone to believe in Christ before they participate in this portion of the worship service.
WHAT DO YOU OFFER FOR MY CHILDREN?
We provide a safe atmosphere for your children, and one they will really enjoy - for infants through 12th grade - there are age specific classes lead by our team of caring teachers. The curriculum is both fun and educational for your children. For more details, click on the Children's Program section. For your "peace of mind," all of our volunteers who work with children and youth have been through a background screening process.
WHAT DO YOU OFFER FOR BABIES?
We provide a well-staffed, safe nursery for infants and toddlers up to 23 months of age. The nursery is located conveniently near the worship area so you have quick access to your child. Some of our parents even keep their kids with them in the service! We are a church with young families, so we all understand what it's like to have babies!
DO YOU HAVE A BUILDING?
Currently we are renting Granby Memorial High School for Sunday mornings, and we rent office space in the center of Granby near Starbucks. This works quite well for us because we are able to keep the focus on serving people and doing ministry, rather than serving a building and a mortgage. At the same time, we are already praying about the 16 acres of land that we own and when we should begin to build. We are trusting God to lead us in the right timing on this. Whenever that time comes, both our land and the building will serve our mission rather than us serving it.
The 16 acres that we own is on route 10/202, one and a half miles north of the center of Granby on the west side.
WHAT MAKES VALLEY BROOK DIFFERENT?
What makes Valley Brook different is our foundation, our focus, and our framework. Our foundation is about a relationship - not about religion. Religion is a list of “do’s and don’ts.” We believe that God wants to be in a personal relationship with all people. God demonstrated that by sending Jesus Christ who makes that relationship possible, so we build everything on that foundation. Our focus is God’s Word, the Bible. We believe God helps us become healthy functioning people through what He teaches us in the Bible. So we focus on the Bible and help people study and apply it to their lives. Our framework is a relational one. So often God uses human relationships to teach us about Him and draw people to Him. So at Valley Brook, we use a framework of relationships to connect people to each other and God. Essential in this framework is a network of small groups to keep people connected, encouraged, and cared for in the community called Valley Brook.
